Swimming Pool Stain Comparison Table

Stain ColorLikely Cause(s)Identification Tip(s)
Green or TealCopper or Nickel (corroding copper plumbing/heater, ionizers, or certain algaecides)Watch for green/teal discoloration of the Regal Metal Indicator Tab in the skimmer basket. Test water for copper.
Blue or Blue-GreenCopper (similar to green)Same as green stains. Watch for blue/blue-green discoloration of the Regal Metal Indicator Tab in the skimmer basket.
Reddish-Brown or Orange/YellowIron (well water, rusting metal objects, some chemicals or pool salt)Watch for reddish-brown/orange/yellow discoloration of the Regal Metal Indicator Tab in the skimmer basket. Test water for iron.
Dark Brown to BlackMetals or decaying organic matterWatch for discoloration of the Regal Metal Indicator Tab in the skimmer basket. Test water for metals. If no color change or positive metal test, treat as an organic stain.
Greenish-Brown Organic debris (leaves, algae, etc.)Brushing surface with a dose of localized granular chlorine directly on the stain. If it lightens, it's likely organic.
Purple/PinkCopper Cyanurate, Cobalt, or oxidized manganesePurple can form with high cyanuric acid (stabilizer) in conjunction with stray copper. Manganese typically comes from well-water. Watch for purple or blue discoloration of the Regal Metal Indicator Tab in the skimmer basket.
White or GrayCalcium deposits (scale) or other mineral buildupScale is often rough to the touch. Use Regal No Phos Metal Out in conjunction with Copper & Scale Out, brush twice daily until scale dissipates, in severe cases, an acid wash (done by a professional) may be needed.
Pink or RedCommonly caused by organic waste.Initial treatment to include EPA Registered Chlorinated Shock Product & Regal Stop Yellow followed by maintenance doses of algaecide, consult your local Regal Dealer for protocol.

NOTE: Proper maintenance of pool equipment and surfaces requires knowing and maintaining the pool's water chemistry (chlorine, pH, alkalinity, calcium hardness, and presence of metals).

Instructions:

  • Step 1-Identify and Test: If your pool skimmer basket has an attached Regal Metal Indicator Tab, use the above chart to identify stray metals in the water. If your skimmer basket does not have a Regal Metal Indicator Tab, take a water sample to your local pool store for metal testing and identification.

  • Step 2-Remove: After the Regal Metal Indicator Tab changes color or a positive metal test, determine best treatment product. Depending on the nature of the stain; surface permeation, pool surface age and condition, water chemistry, etc. more than one treatment with the following products may be needed, follow directions closely and remember to brush surfaces during treatment:

    • Green-Blue-Black Stains caused by Copper or Nickel: Regal Stain Out.

    • Purple-Gray-Brown Stains caused by Iron, Lead, Aluminum, Manganese, Cobalt, Copper & Silver: Regal Super Stain Out.

    • Always do a small test spot on an inconspicuous area of the pool surface before treating the whole pool for stains. Temporary water haze may happen during treatment, keep the pump running and consider using Natural Water Clarifier to expedite cloudy cleanup.

    • Brush pool surface at least twice daily during stain removal treatment.

  • Step 3-Eliminate: During Stain Treatment, add Regal Super Metal Eliminator & Stain Preventer to pool pump (or skimmer) basket. Super Metal Eliminator will absorb stray metals. When the Super Metal Eliminator is added to the basket, the cloth pouch will may temporarily expand. Properly dispose of and replace with a fresh Super Metal Eliminator when the cloth pouch contents feel crystallized or sandy. This occurs when the Super Metal Eliminator absorbs 4ppm (20,000 gallons) of metals or equivalent based on pool size.

  • NOTE: While eliminating metals from the water, maintain chlorine levels under 3 ppm. Using chlorinated shock products or high levels of chlorine during the metal elimination process will cause the metal stains to reform.

  • Prevention is Key: Maintaining proper water chemistry, regularly cleaning your pool, and promptly removing debris can help prevent most stains. Maintenance doses of Regal No Phos Metal Out (Metal Out/Magnet Concentrate for Salt Pools) the day after shocking will keep stains and scale off pool surfaces. For pools prone to metals or filled with well-water, replace the Regal Super Metal Eliminator cartridge in the pump or skimmer basket regularly.

By carefully observing the color and characteristics of the stain and using the identification tips above, you can take the first steps toward restoring your pool's clean and inviting appearance. Remember to always follow the instructions on any pool chemicals you use.
